I love how easy it is to discard what theatrical brings to the table, that everyone ignores. so lets take 2019:
From cinema alone Disney cleared $3.4B profit from $13B of revenue at the BO. Oh and that’s from 8 movies…
    Warner Media $2.4B profit.
    NBC Universal $833M profit.
This is all before, PVOD, Streaming, Digital, licensing of content etc.

Netflix spent $20.2B of which last year over $13B was on content (this year $17B on content) and cleared $2.4B.

Theatrical still provides close to 50% of the revenue over the lifespan of the content.

Streaming in fact is WAY MORE profitable than theaters because there’s no added marginal cost for additional folks to view a film globally on a streaming platform. So Netflix, for example, can instantly stream a film to 200 million subs globally with NO marketing costs. Think about it folks. Movie theaters are becoming like Broadway Shows, a rare treat to see live but most lost gobs of money. Brick and mortar theaters v streaming is like pushing for the horse and buggy when we’ve got this thing called the automobile……JEEZ

I do not see the upside in studios turning their backs on theatres and allowing them to die a slow death. The busiest theatre day is Xmas day. Do you honestly believe families desire to stay at home 365 days and stream??? People desire interaction and the big screen with popcorn and soda. Make a long term investment and send new releases to the theatres!! Stop thinking short term!! Mediocre management decision!

I’m still not sure how the streaming math adds up on studio movies but I wish them luck with their debts.

Anybody remember Monty Python? “Bring out yer dead!” Sounds about right.

The theaters are capable of handling larger crowds safely, but they need quality content, these B films and repeats won’t pull customers in, so the studios need to be of more assistance, and finally Tenet wasn’t a good film much less a crowd pleaser. I’m sure you know the answer as to why..

    • GS on October 16, 2020 6:10 pm

Tenet is a great film. One of Nolan’s most personal and audacious as he continues his trajectory away from traditional narrative-driven films. It’s just not something that was ever going to make waves with Middle America, which was the only crowd that got to see it for its first 2-3 weeks, and it wasn’t going to reopen cinemas by itself without the help of a four-quad Disney movie.

Now ask Disney, Amazon and Apple the same question.

Disney has been trying to unload the El Capitan theatre for 20 years, they arent trying to buy up theatre chains

      • Anonymous on October 15, 2020 7:04 pm

Disney owns half of that block. They own the Disney store to the east of the El Capitan and they own the building to the west where Jimmy Kimmel Live films plus the office buildings above the theater are Jimmy Kimmels production offices. They don’t want to unload the El Capitan.

This should be a wake-up call for the theatrical industry to get its act together. Allowing streamers to swoop in and take all of the most prestigious actors and filmmakers is just the beginning. This is still a viable, and potentially prosperous, business. I don’t buy into this silly notion that exhibition cannot coexist with streaming platforms. Nonsense. The way to stay relevant is to continue greenlighting your tried-and-true IP’s, sure, but also taking some of those profits and developing projects that will keep huge stars like Leonardo DiCaprio around. (I think it kinda sucks that his movie will drop on Netflix, but I digress.) Think ’90s/’00s era DreamWorks. You can certainly make good money off “Shrek” while still having enough to take a chance on something like “American Beauty” or “Almost Famous”. Keep a variety on the marquee!

The irony in MAGA-loving AMC being destroyed by their cult leader is a KEE! I love this song. LMAOOOOOOOOO 😂

What on Earth are these people talking about? Rooting for them? How are they supposed to come out stronger without stimulus or people feeling safe to actually enter a theater without becoming seriously ill? They can barely open in Los Angeles and aren’t even open in New York and won’t be for the rest of the year. This is purely “stock talk” and not reality. The reality is that they are looking for any avenue to dump theaters, monetize streaming, and move forward in a post-Covid world. Nonsense.

      the problem is…streaming isnt profitable.
