Hulu has released the first trailer for Wu-Tang: An American Saga, a 10-episode drama from Wu-Tang Clan frontman The RZA, writer Alex Tse (Superfly) and Imagine Television.
The trailer opens with RZA, played by Ashton Sanders, working his magic on the turntables. “I’m just trying to make music,” he says at one point in the trailer. “If you want to make it in this world, then put in the work, OK?” he’s told by another character. He’s later told, “You listening to beats — you ain’t listening to the whispers out in the streets.”
There also are peeks in the clip of some of the rap crew’s other founders Raekwon, GZA, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Inspectah Deck.
Created and written by The RZA and Tse, the series is based on the Wu-Tang Clan, one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history. It will explore and expand the band’s world.
Set in early ’90s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs aka The RZA, who strives to unite a dozen young black men who are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories.
The cast also includes Shameik Moore, Dave East, Siddiq Saunderson, Marcus Callender, Julian Elijah Martinez, Zolee Griggs, Erika Alexander, TJ Atoms and Johnell Young
Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo executive produce with Tse, Zisk, The RZA and Method Man. Fellow Wu-Tang Clan members Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and GZA as well as the Estate of Ol’ Dirty Bastard serve as consulting producers. James Seidman oversees the project for Imagine.
Hulu will release the first three episodes of the drama series on Wednesday, September 4, with the remaining seven episodes streaming weekly.
