Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have unveiled the trailer for Vivo, the anticipated animated film starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, which premieres globally on August 6.
The musical adventure pic—featuring original songs by Miranda—centers on his character Vivo, a one-of-kind kinkajou (or rainforest “honey bear”) who spends his days playing music with his beloved owner Andrés (Juan de Marcos).
While they may not speak the same language, Vivo and Andrés prove to be the perfect duo, given their shared love of music—until tragedy strikes.
After Andrés receives a letter from the famous Marta Sandoval (three-time Grammy-winner Gloria Estefan), inviting her old partner to her farewell concert with the hope of reconnecting, it’s up to Vivo to deliver a message that Andrés never could: A love letter to Marta, written long ago, in the form of a song. To ensure success in his journey, Vivo enlists the aid of an energetic tween named Gabi (newcomer Ynairaly Simo), who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum to fulfill his owner’s wishes.
Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) directed Vivo, from a script he penned with Quiara Alegria Hudes (In the Heights). Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) was the film’s co-director.
Pic also features the voices of Zoe Saldaña, Michael Rooker, Brian Tyree Henry, Nicole Byer, Katie Lowes, Olivia Trujillo and Lidya Jewett.
It was produced by Lisa Stewart, Michelle Wong, and Oscar winner Rich Moore (Zootopia), with Miranda, Golden Globe winner Laurence Mark (Dreamgirls), and Louis Koo Tin Lok (The Mitchells vs. The Machines) serving as exec producers.
Oscar winning cinematographer Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) served as a visual consultant for the film, while Tony and Grammy winner Alex Lacamoire (The Greatest Showman) was another key player behind the scenes, serving as its composer and executive music producer.
