Broadway has been dark since mid-March, but its 2019-20 season already was winding down. In fact, there were 31 shows on the Main Stem boards when the coronavirus made this the cruelest of years, 18 of which are eligible for the 74th annual Tony Awards. Today we’ll get the nominations for those coveted statuettes, and you can watch the livestream above.
Aladdin Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart will announce the nominees starting at noon ET/9 a.m. PT.
The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, which put on the show that celebrates excellence in Broadway theater, said in August that the Tonys will be presented digitally this year. No date for the trophy show itself is set, with so much still in flux. The Tonys had been scheduled for June 7 at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall with its usual live broadcast on CBS.
The official eligibility cutoff date for Tony consideration was February 19 for all Broadway productions opening during the 2019-20 season. Three high-profile productions that already had begun performances prior to the shutdown — West Side Story, Six and Girl from the North Country — are not eligible because not enough Tony voters had been invited.
Here is the list of productions that are eligible for the 74th annual Tony Awards:
A Christmas Carol
Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune
The Great Society
The Height of the Storm
Jagged Little Pill
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical
Moulin Rouge! The Musical
My Name Is Lucy Barton
The Rose Tattoo
Sea Wall/A Life
A Soldier’s Play
The Sound Inside
Tina – The Tina Turner Musical
