‘The Wheel’ First Clip: Toronto Drama Comes From ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ Director Steve Pink

The Wheel

EXCLUSIVE: Here’s first footage from The Wheel, the Toronto Film Festival drama directed by Steve Pink, whose credits include Hot Tub Time Machine.

The pic follows Albee and Walker, a young couple on the brink of divorce, who rent a mountain getaway to save their fledgling marriage. Before long, their personal drama creates tension between their newly engaged AirBnB hosts – Ben & Carly – leaving the viewer to wonder if either couples’ relationships will survive the weekend.

Cast include Amber Midthunder, Taylor Gray, Bethany Anne Lind, Nelson Lee, Carly Nykanen, and Kevin Pasdon. Trent Atkinson wrote the screenplay. It was produced by Josh Jason, Molly Gilula, Steve Pink, Trent Atkinson, Sean Crampton, Amber Midthunder, and Taylor Gray.

The film premieres in Toronto Film Festival’s Contemporary World Cinema strand on September 13. UTA is handling sales.

“At first glance, this is a departure for me as a filmmaker. I’ve spent my career writing and/or directing comedy. The Wheel is an intimate drama without a laugh for miles. At least not any that are hot tub and/or time machine related,” said director Pink.

“But in another way, this film isn’t a departure at all. In looking at my body of work to write this statement, I was surprised to discover a pattern of choosing stories inside the comedy genre where the protagonists are largely preoccupied with deliberately taking steps toward an unknown to force themselves into a transformative experience, an investigation into self.”
