The Film That Lit My Fuse is a Deadline video series that aims to provide an antidote to headlines about industry uncertainty by swinging the conversation back to the creative ambitions, formative influences and inspirations of some of today’s great screen artists.
Every installment asks the same five questions. Today’s subject is Jeymes Samuel, the British musician — stage name The Bullitts — who made his feature directing debut on The Harder They Fall, a rocking Western he wrote and directed, and cast with Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors, Regina King, Zazie Beets, Delroy Lindo and LaKeith Stanfield. Netflix released the film last month, and Samuel composed the score. There are times when as a journalist you ponder the future of a troubled movie business, and then you interview a young artist with such exuberance and knowledge of classic films that it leaves you smiling and saying, artists like this guy will figure it out. Watch Samuel make a case for the enduring power of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and other formative influences, and see how infectious his enthusiasm is.
