EXCLUSIVE: Recently, two giants of the industry, Steven Spielberg and John Williams, got together at a Beverly Hills theater for an American Cinematheque event called “50 Years of Music and Movies.” Of course that meant Williams’ music and Spielberg’s movies. Suffice to say it was quite a memorable evening.

Now Deadline can present highlights of that conversation including how they got together on their first film, in 1972, The Sugarland Express (released in 1974), and then cemented perhaps the most significant relationship between a filmmaker and their composer in film history. They talk Jaws, Close Encounters of The Third Kind, Indiana Jones, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and their most recent The Fabelmans, for which five-time Oscar winner Williams has received his record — he keeps breaking his own — 53rd Academy Award nomination, this time for Best Original Score. Spielberg has received his ninth directing nomination, 12th Best Picture nomination and first Original Screenplay nomination (shared with Tony Kushner) for his most personal film ever.
