JJ Abrams confessed to the packed house at Disney’s D23 Expo over the weekend that a trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker wasn’t quite ready to show fans at the annual confab. But a sizzle reel was shown in the room that recapped the original Skywalker saga that began 42 years ago.
Now Disney has unveiled that footage, ahead of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘s theatrical release December 20.
The new footage features Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in what likely is the final showdown in the series’ Light Side vs. Dark side. The look comes after a Rise of Skyawalker teaser hit the web in April after being shown at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago — that video clocked 111 million views in its first 24 hours.
While this might wrap the O.G. Skywalker saga, there’s plenty more in the Star Wars Movie Universe — not to mention The Mandalorian, and Rogue One and Obi-Wan spinoffs, headed for Disney+. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in May next feature outing will be a new installment directed by Game of Thrones duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, with a 2022 target date.
There’s also a trio of new pics in the works from Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed the eighth installment of the Skywalker series, The Last Jedi.
Abrams returns to direct The Rise of Skywalker which was penned by Abrams with Chris Terrio, Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. The actor gang is all back too: Ridley, Driver, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson, Billie Lourd, Kelly Marie Tran and Lupita Nyong’o from the most recent installments along with franchise staples Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Ian McDiarmid and newcomers Keri Russell (who appears at the end of the sizzle) and Richard E. Grant.
