‘Star Wars’ Jimmy Kimmel Special On ABC, Marathon On TNT Set Ahead Of ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’ Premiere

'Star Wars' Marathon Set On TNT

Ahead of the Dec. 19 theatrical release of Disney-Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! will do a primetime special on Dec. 16. It will feature director  JJ Abrams and cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Kelly Marie Tran and Keri Russell who will be interviewed by Kimmel and participate in a game of “Force Family Feud.”

ABC has been using the synergy play with JKL as part of its marketing campaign for the new Star Wars movies.

Separately, TNT just announced a special Star Wars movie marathon ahead of the The Rise of Skywalker debut. TNT will air films from the franchise on back-to-back weekends beginning Friday, December 13 through Sunday, December 29.

Turner’s 2016 $250 million+ mega-deal with Disney, which granted it the rights to show 10 Star Wars movies on cable networks TNT and TBS and online until 2024, came under scrutiny last year, ahead of the launch of Disney+. At that time, Disney reached out to Turner to try and buy back the TV rights to the movies. Ultimately, an agreement for the streaming rights was reached, with all Star Wars movies set to launch on Disney+ within the first year.

In exchange, Turner got basic-cable rights to other high-profile movies, including Marvel titles, I had heard at the time.

The Star Wars saga follows the adventures of Luke Skywalker, a Jedi that possess an energy field binding all living things and the universe together – The Force. He alongside Han Solo, Princess Leia and their crew of droids and aliens alike, fight for the resistance against the ruthless Imperial authorities and restore freedom and justice to the galaxy.
