‘Slash/Back’ Trailer: SXSW Film Features Rebellious Teens, The Arctic Wilderness & Aliens

“Let’s go hunting.”

That’s a key line in the first trailer for buzzy SXSW title Slash/Back, which features a group of teen girls who, given an upbringing in the arctic wilderness, are well prepared when an alien invasion comes to their small town of Pangnirtung — “Pang” for short.

Maika (Tasiana Shirley) and her best friends, Jesse (Alexis Vincent-Wolfe), Leena (Chelsea Pruksy) and Uki (Nalajoss Ellsworth) find their typical summer day — a monotony of 24-hour sunlight — interrupted by aliens threatening their sleepy hamlet.

As the girls head to a party at home the hottest boy in town — Rory Anawak as Thomassie — they have to deal with not just the alien-seeming local boys, but soon with the actual aliens themselves. But these girls have been underestimated their whole lives and, using makeshift weapons and their horror movie knowledge, they show the invaders that “nobody f*cks with the girls from Pang.”

The film — whose title is a play on the term “clap back” — is the work of writer, director and producer Nyla Innuksuk. Innuksuk co-scripted with Ryan Cavan for producers Mixtape VR, Scythia Films, Stellar Citizens and Red Marrow. Other producers include The Witch‘s Daniel Bekerman, Christopher Yurkovich, Alex Ordanis, Stacey Aglok Macdonald, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and Ethan Lazar.

The film is being sold at SXSW by UTA. Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales and co-repping domestic.
