Grey’s Anatomy alum Sandra Oh has traded in her scrubs for a “green handbag” in her latest TV role in BBC America’s drama Killing Eve. She plays an MI5 officer on the hunt for a notorious female assassin, Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer.
“Immediately what struck me was the tone and [creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s] extraordinarily unique and fresh voice — she was exploring the genre of thriller in a completely unique way,” Oh said, speaking during the network’s panel at Deadline’s annual The Contenders Emmys event. “The fact that is was a psychological thriller drama, an intense dance between these two characters of Eve and Villanelle, it was just so juicy.”
Oh also talked about the shooting in Europe and how that setting provided a “familiar genre feel…except it’s from a completely different point of view — through Eve’s eyes, which is a woman in her mid-life carrying around a green handbag and trying to find a killer,” she said.
Killing Eve was an instant hit for the network, wrapping its first season with a streak of weekly rating growth. The show received an early second-season renewal ahead of its series premiere.
