Ricky Martin has always been known for his superstar singing, but every now and then he takes on an acting challenge to change things up. That is exactly what has resulted in the former General Hospital star’s first Emmy nomination, for playing Antonio D’Amico, Gianni Versace’s partner, in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.
Martin is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie opposite two other co-stars of the FX limited series, Finn Wittrock and Edgar Ramirez. But he isn’t worried about whether he will win, rather about how the nomination allows him to bring attention to issues close to his heart like fighting homophobia and injustice. We talked about all of that when he visited our Deadline studios for the latest edition of my video series The Actor’s Side.
We also discuss how Ryan Murphy offered him the acting opportunity of his career to date, his previous friendships with Ramirez (who plays Versace) and co-star Penelope Cruz, the personal meaning of the scene in which his character watches as Versace comes out publicly, the trajectory of his own career from Menudo to now, and more.
