UPDATED captions: We received feedback about the captions used in the video with Nyle DiMarco and how they were not accurate and, at times, blocking his video. Our very helpful producer David Janove has switched things around and fixed the captions so that they are more accurate. Please click the “CC” button and you should be able to see them. Thank you very much for your patience and your feedback.
PREVIOUS: Many may recognize Nyle DiMarco as the winner of the 22nd season of America’s Next Top Model and as the winner of the 22nd season of Dancing With the Stars. Other than that, you may just recognize his dreamy face on fashion ads.
Beyond that, DiMarco is a trailblazing activist for the deaf community. Being the first deaf person to ever win America’s Next Top Model and Dancing With the Stars, he used his platform to be an advocate and push for proper representation of the deaf community. With his latest project Deaf U, DiMarco and the cast of college co-eds put an authentic lens on the often misrepresented deaf community — and it makes for great TV.
The Netflix docuseries, which debuted on October 9, revisits DiMarco’s alma mater, a renowned private college for the deaf and hard of hearing. Spotlighting a tight-knit group of deaf students, the series gives an unfiltered, nuanced and unexpected look at the deaf experience. It can definitely teach you a thing or three about a community that is wildly underrepresented.
DiMarco paid a visit to Deadline’s New Hollywood Podcast to talk about Deaf U, his upcoming slate of projects and deaf inclusivity in Hollywood. He also shared his idea for an all-deaf adaptation of The Breakfast Club and taught us a curse word in American Sign Language because we are immature like that. Watch the episode above or listen to it below…or do both!
