Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and the Walt Disney Company shared the first official teaser for Moana 2 this morning on their YouTube accounts.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
The film’s synopsis reads: After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
The sequel is set to open in theaters Nov. 27, 2024. Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho both return for the film. Released in 2016, the first Moana grossed more than $687 million at the global box office and earned Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and the original song “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Set in ancient Polynesia, the first film opens as a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana’s island. In return, she answers the Ocean’s call to seek out Maui to set things right.
Johnson teased footage from the sequel at this year’s Cinemacon convention where he was also awarded a NATO Spirit of the Industry Award to large applause. Johnson spoke about the ebbs and flows in the business, adding “But the one thing that will remain is the theater business.”
