“This is the most unbelievable thing that could ever happen in life,” says Sarah Silverman’s gal-pal character Parker in the first trailer for Universal’s Marry Me. Have a look above.
Described as Notting Hill meets The Proposal, the story centers on pop superstar Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) who, moments before marrying her rock-star fiancé (Maluma) at Madison Square Garden, finds out he was cheating with her assistant and spontaneously melts down onstage. She then picks a random man — a math teacher named Charlie (Owen Wilson) — out of the crowd to marry instead. What starts as a goof ends up becoming an exploration of relationships, expectations and destiny.
The trailer runs through a series of fish-out-of-water moments between the two — he joins her on the red carpet and at a press conference, she joins him at a school dance and in the classroom — as they try to make it work.
“Is this smart?” Charlie asks Kat.
“I think we left smart six weeks ago,” she responds.
The movie initially was set up at Universal by studio brass Donna Langley and Peter Cramer, moved to STX in spring of 2019 and then, by summer of that year, the Kat Coiro-directed feature was back at U with all elements intact.
Like may pandemic-era projects, the film’s release date likewise has seen some changes. It was first set for Valentine’s Day of this year, then moved to summer and then moved again to Valentine’s Day weekend, but this time in 2022. Specifically, the film will be released on Feb. 11.
