Disney and Pixar unveiled the teaser trailer for their upcoming animated Toy Story spinoff feature Lightyear.

Directed by Angus MacLane (Finding Dory), the film stars Chris Evans and was written by Pete Docter, who also serves as executive producer, with Galyn Susman as producer.

Lightyear will follow how the young test pilot became a space ranger and hero who spawned the Buzz Lightyear action figure made famous in Pixar’s Toy Story movies.

Questions may arise as to how a toy could have an origin story, but in an interview with EW, MacLane explains how it will all make sense.

“Set in the world of Toy Story‘ is kind of weird. Another way to get at it, it’s a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character,” MacLane, who co-directed Finding Dory and multiple Toy Story shorts for Pixar, tells EW over Zoom. “In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure.”

Created by John Lasseter, Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Joe Ranft, the 26-year-old Toy Story franchise has grossed $3 billion worldwide. It’s the 20th-highest-grossing franchise worldwide and the fourth-biggest animated franchise

Lightyear debuts in theaters Summer 2022.  Watch the teaser trailer above.
