The opening scene sets the tone for Joy Ride redband trailer, when two brand-new young acquaintances bond for life when one is insulted over her race and the other pops the insulter in the schnozz. Delivered complete with unexpected expletive. Have a look above — and probably quell the volume if you’re at work.
From the producers of Neighbors and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Sabrina Wu and Everything Everywhere Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as unlikely friends who embark on an international adventure — and might cause an international incident. Or three. The film is having its world premiere today at SXSW and will hit theaters July 7 via Lionsgate.
Here’s the scenario: When Audrey’s (Park) business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the aid of Lolo (Cola), her irreverent childhood best friend who also happens to be a hot mess; Kat (Hsu), her college friend-turned-Chinese soap star; and Deadeye (Wu), Lolo’s eccentric cousin. Complete with some Bridesmaids-like shenanigans, their experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
