Jonathan Nolan got an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination on his first time out for Memento, which had a script by big brother Christopher Nolan but a story by credit from Jonathan — or Jonah, as friends and family call him — as his short story the film was based on had not yet come out, thus making him eligible. He went on to officially collaborate with Chris Nolan on The Prestige, The Dark Knight Trilogy and most recently 2014’s Interstellar.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Nolan he has broken out on his own as a major force in television, not only with the current HBO smash hit Westworld, which should again be a major Emmy player for its second season (Nolan personally received writing, directing and producing Emmy noms in 2017), but also his previous CBS hit Person of Interest which ran for five seasons on the network before he tackled Westworld.
Nolan has proven he is a force and talks about all of this, as well as his obsession with the AI phenomenon which is figuring one way or another into so many of his projects these days, as he visits our studios for my Deadline video series Behind the Lens. Among other things we discuss his latest professional partnership with wife Lisa Joy, who joins him in collaborating on Westworld which has already been picked up for Season 3.
