‘Framing Agnes’ Trailer: First Look At Chase Joynt’s Hot Docs Title Featuring Angelica Ross & More

'Framing Agnes'

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has a new trailer for Framing Agnes, a Sundance award winner from director Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) that is heading to Toronto for a special presentation as part of Hot Docs next month.

The documentary centers on Agnes, a young trans woman who, in 1958, entered a study about sex disorders at UCLA to get the gender-affirming care she needed, by any means necessary. Her story was long considered to be exceptional until never-before-seen case files of other patients were found in 2017.

Angelica Ross, Jen Richards, Zackary Drucker, Silas Howard, Max Wolf Valerio and Stephen Ira feature in the film, which uses re-enactment and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to breathe new life into previously unknown people who redefined gender in the midcentury. Joynt wrote the script with Morgan M. Page, and produced alongside Samantha Curley and Shant Joshi.

Framing Agnes made its world premiere in the NEXT section of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it picked up two major awards: the Audience Award and the Innovator Award. Check out the trailer for the film above.
