Emmys: Deadline Vs. Gold Derby Smackdown On Movie & Limited Series Categories -HBO, Netflix, FX In Close Battle For The Gold

Pete Hammond Deadline

Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and I conclude our series of smackdowns trying to predict the major categories at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards which get handed out on Sunday night. Today we go head to head on the Limited Series and TV movie categories where consensus is hard to find.  This may be the most competitive and least predictable of all the Emmy contests on Sunday with HBO’s  Chernobyl coming in from last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys with a real head of steam and seven awards already under its best in the Limited Series categories.  It also leads in nominations overall with 19 and looks to be the one to beat, but O’Neil makes a real case for Ava DuVernay’s very fine and highly emotional Netflix Limited Series, When They See Us earning the bulk of votes at Gold Derby to pull it out.  Then there is the razzle dazzle of FX’s Fosse/Verdon  just to mix things up and make this even harder to call.  Showtime’s Escape At Dannemora and HBO’s other entry Sharp Objects are in the race too just to make this even more competitive.  On the TV movie side  HBO’s reboot of Deadwood is looking strong, the only contender to have numerous nominations , although it has to contend with Netflix’s latest Black Mirror anthology entry, “movies” that have dominated in recent Emmy years.  We also go out on a limb trying to call the acting categories , all from the Limited Series side by the way,  and these are REALLY close races.
