EXCLUSIVE: Here’s the first subtitled trailer for Quentin Dupieux’s Directors Fortnight opener Deerskin. The Artist Oscar winner Jean Dujardin trades in his dancing shoes for a suede jacket in the thriller whose synopsis reads: Georges, 44 years old, and his jacket, 100% deerskin, have a plan.
Dupieux is a self-taught filmmaker and musician known for his offbeat work that has included debut Steak and 2010’s Rubber, the latter about a homicidal car tire. His most recent film was 2018’s comedy Keep An Eye Out. Dupieux also regularly releases electronic music albums.
Of Deerskin he says, “I wanted to film insanity. I’ve been pigeonholed as a director who makes crazy films, but I never really filmed insanity head on. Of course, there is something nutty about Steak, Rubber, Reality, Keep an Eye Out!. But my earlier films always used some kind of hack to keep the madness ‘funny’ and unreal. The movies were crazy, not the characters. I really wanted to finally confront a character who goes off the deep end, with no fancy tricks, without my usual fakery. And so Deerskin is my first realistic film. I know people laugh when I say it, but that’s what I truly believe. This was the first time I came face to face with reality. A story, actors, and that’s it.”
Also starring in the WTFilms production is Adèle Haenel. The French release is set for June 19 via Diaphana. WTFilms has international sales and CAA is on North America.
