MGM on Wednesday released the trailer for Cyrano, Joe Wright’s musical adaptation of the classic tale that stars Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The pic, which world premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, is gearing up for its December 31 release in select theaters via United Artists Releasing, followed by a larger rollout in the new year.
Dinklage plays Cyrano, a member of the Kings Guard whose best friend and secret love is Roxanne (Bennett) — “My fate is to love her from afar,” Cyrano laments in the trailer. She is stuck with a suiter (Ben Mendelsohn) foist upon her to secure her family’s financial future, so Cyrano instead encourages her relationship with the strapping Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr), who has what Cyrano lacks in physicality but lacks what Cyrano has in wit and intellect.
As in the classic story, Cyrano’s words in Christian’s letters work on Roxanne, but circumstances will change and the ruse can only last so long.
The film is set between 1640-1720 and is adapted from the stage musical by Erica Schmidt (who is married to Dinklage). Bryce Dessner & Aaron Dessner did the music, with lyrics by Matt Berninger & Carin Besser.
Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Guy Heeley are producers of the pic, from Bron and MGM. Schmidt, Sarah-Jane Robinson, Sheeraz Shah, Lucas Webb, Matt Berninger, Carin Besser and Aaron Dessner are executive producers.
