‘Bottoms’ Filmmakers On Telling A Story With “More Messy, Real Queer Teens” – SXSW Studio

'Bottoms' - SXSW Studio

BOTTOMS

Section: Headliners

Directors: Emma Seligman

Screenwriters: Emma Seligman & Rachel Sennott

Logline: Bottoms, a refreshingly unique raunchy comedy, focuses on two girls, PJ and Josie, who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But PJ and Josie find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.

Panelists: Rachel Sennott, Emma Seligman, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Miles Fowler

Premiered: March 11, 2023

Key Quotes: Seligman: “Our goal was to make a queer teen story that wasn’t traumatic and that also wasn’t a cutesy, earnest, like non-sexual story. It felt really freeing to be able to tell something with more messy, real queer teens in it.”

Sennott: “It was rewarding to make something so stupid.”

Edebiri: “It’s fun and freeing, and being stupid is a political act.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.
