‘Appendage’ Director Anna Zlokovic On Separating Her Anxiety From Herself And Turning It Into A Character – SXSW Studio

'Appendage' Director Anna Zlokovic & Cast - SXSW Studio

Section: Narrative Spotlight

Director: Anna Zlokovic

Screenwriter: Anna Zlokovic

Logline: Hannah, a young fashion designer, seems fine on the surface, but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt. Soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body: The Appendage. As Hannah’s health declines, The Appendage grows more powerful and begins to fuel her anxieties – her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend, and her parents’ lack of love and understanding. At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery— there are others out there like her.

Panelists: Anna Zlokovic, Kauser Mohammed, Brandon Michael Smith, Emily Hampshire, David Worthen Brooks

Premiered: March 11, 2023

Key Quote: Zlokovic: “I had a session in therapy a long time ago, where my therapist was like, ‘Try separating your anxiety from yourself and turn it into a separate character.’ And that character didn’t look like [the appendage], but it kind of sparked something in my brain which has now, a couple of years later, externalized into this.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.
