Here’s the charming first full trailer for musical romance Annette, which was this morning announced as the opening-night pic at the Cannes Film Festival.
Marion Cotillard, Adam Driver and Simon Helberg star in the movie set in contemporary Los Angeles. It tells the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor and Ann, a singer of international renown. In the spotlight, they are the perfect couple, healthy, happy, and glamourous. The birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives. Pic also features an original soundtrack composed by U.S. band Sparks.
Sparks originated the story, scripted the movie and is composing original songs, and celebrated music producer Marius de Vries, known for his work on La La Land, Bohemian Rhapsody and Moulin Rouge, was executive music producer. The movie will play out all in song and the music was originally intended to be a Sparks album.
The trailer certainly gives the impression of a La La Land with a Euro auteur twist.
Producing are Charles Gillibert’s (Personal Shopper) CG Cinema, Driver and Paul-Dominique Vacharasinthu (The Jesus Rolls) of Tribus P Films. Amazon Studios will distribute in the U.S.
The movie, Carax’s English-language debut, will arrive in Cannes nine years after the filmmaker’s Holy Motors premiered at the French festival to acclaim.
Annette has been set to open the Riviera festival on July 6, however the event’s status remains the subject of doubt (certainly as a large scale international event) due to high levels of Covid infection in Europe and in France, which is currently under lockdown.
