EXCLUSIVE: In the first look at Netflix’s adaptation of the critically acclaimed Broadway American Son play by Christopher Demos-Brown, star and executive producer Kerry Washington talks about just how relevant the narrative and how it has been like working on a project that dissects unconscious bias and race and how it affects society today. “This issue is an issue that belongs to all of us,” said Washington in the featurette above.
Helmed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, (Broadway director of A Raisin In the Sun, Fences), American Son follows interracial couple Kendra Ellis-Connor (Washington) and her husband Scott (Steven Pasquale) as they search for their missing teenage boy. During the relentless search, Kendra struggles to put the pieces together in a South Florida police station. Washington, Pasquale as well as cast members Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee reprise their roles in the adaptation which presents four distinct viewpoints, while also navigating the unique dynamic of an interracial couple trying to raise a mixed-race son.
American Son will be available for streaming on Netflix on November 1. Washington and Pilar Savone executive produce under Washington’s banner Simpson Street. Jeffrey Richards and Rebecca Gold also serve as executive producers.
