Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek says in a new YouTube video that his one-year battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer has included “moments of great pain” and “massive attacks of great depression” that left him questioning the point of “fighting on” – doubts he brushed aside as a betrayal of his wife Jean, his family and fans, other cancer patients and his faith in God.
Trebek was diagnosed one year ago, and says he’s now among the 18% of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer patients who reach that milestone. “I’d be lying if I said the journey had been an easy one,” Trebek says in the candid address, adding that he jokes with friends that “the cancer won’t kill me, the chemo will.”
The beloved game show icon notes that while the two-year survival rate is just 7%, he and his doctor are hopeful he’ll be providing another update in a year. “If we take just one day at a time with a positive attitude,” Trebek says, “anything is possible.”
