Disobedience follows a woman as she returns to the community in London that shunned her years earlier for an attraction to a childhood friend. Once she is back, those passions reignite. Alessandro Nivola took to the stage at Deadline’s The Contenders New York recently to talk about his role as Dovid Kuperman, the devoted husband who finds himself at the center of a love triangle.
Nivola told the invitation-only crowd that Dovid repeatedly advocates for Ronit (Rachel Weisz), the estranged daughter of revered Rabbi Rav Krushka, who collapses while delivering a sermon about the divine nature of man’s free will. Dovid’s tireless defense of Ronit comes with a cost: she resumes her romantic relationship with his wife, Esti (Rachel McAdams).
The film explores the theme of transgression in the modern world. Nivola talked about its respectful treatment of the faith — and his extensive work immersing himself in New York’s Orthodox Jewish community to understand the culture and customs, and learn how to properly recite certain prayers.
