‘Kingdom Of Ice’, Cormac McCarthy, Strong Dads: ICM’s Chris Silbermann

Each week, Deadline’s Hot Reads presents what Hollywood’s power players are reading and what they think is special about each book.

A voracious reader, Chris Silbermann, founding partner of ICM Partners, has a pile of books on his desk any given day as he peruses through material that might translate into the next great movie. The English major from Berkeley shares his recommended reads:

Kingdom of IceIn the Kingdom Of Ice by Hampton Sides (Doubleday)
I love stories that pit real-life characters against nearly insurmountable odds. Endurance, the story of Ernest Shackleton’s journey to the South Pole, is one of my favorites of all time. Kingdom Of Ice is very much an American adventure story in the same vein – both a test of physical and emotional endurance in the harshest of environments, and a portrait of true leadership in the face of almost insurmountable adversity. It’s an incredible read.

Strong Fathers, Strong DaughtersStrong Fathers, Strong Daughters By Meg Meeker, M.D. (Random House – original publisher)
I am the father of a very bright, very strong-willed and truly amazing 9-year-old daughter. This book has an interesting point of view about the father/daughter dynamic that I appreciate and am learning from. I can use all the help I can get!

This is a book that rarely leaves my office or my nightstand. I was given a first-edition printing as a gift. I studied Cormac as an English major in college. He is one of my all-time favorite writers, but maybe it’s the combination of the other two themes – survival against adversity and the journey of raising a child (a son in this case) – that really speaks to me in this book. I find the novel so fundamental and archetypal that I value it as a reminder and reference point. It resonated with me as deeply as any book I’ve ever read in my life.
