‘Clinton: The Musical’, Summer Hit, Seeks Coin For Commercial Move

Clinton: The Musical, a lowdown spoof of the lives and times of Bill and Hillary, was a hit at both the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012 and this past summer’s New York Musical Theater Festival. Now producer Kari Lynn Hearn and exec producer Ken Davenport (current box office smash It’s Only A Play) have beefed up the cast for a pair of industry-invite presentations in contemplation of a commercial move.

The November 6-7 showcases will feature Kerry Butler (Catch Me If You Can, Xanadu) and Alan Campbell (Sunset Boulevard) as Hill and Bill in the show, penned by Australian brothers Michael and Paul Hodge, and staged by Dan Knechtages, who had strong notices for his directing and choreography of Xanadu and the hoopsters-and-cheerleaders tuner Lysistrata Jones. Also in the cast: Duke LaFoontwo-time Emmy winner Judy Gold (The Rosie O’Donnell Show), Kevin Zaks, Veronica Kuehn, Darren Bluestone, Josh Lamon and Kara Guy.

Clinton Global Initiative Brings Business And World Leaders TogetherIn a damn-with-faint-praise notice in July, the New York Times opined, “If your idea of an evening that is pleasant ‘depends on what “the meaning of the word is is’ ” then this show provides a fine time. … the lyrics, in songs like ‘Sexual Relations’ and ‘No’ [are] often clever. Even if the music isn’t memorable, at least there are no Fleetwood Mac singalongs. But the humor is relentlessly low, with Monica under a desk and Ken in studded leather straps and black fishnet undies.”

That last line was apparently enough to sell out the house over three extensions. The producers aren’t saying whether they’re looking for an off- or on-Broadway move, or even where the showcase will take place. You’ll have to go to clintonthemusical.com for the pitch and more info.
