Mipcom Briefs: Shine France Grabs Formats ‘Decimate’, ‘Help! I Can’t Cook!’; Talpa Media Launches Middle East Unit

Shine France has picked up remake rights to quiz show Decimate. Created and originally produced by Red Arrow Entertainment’s CPL Productions, the series recently was commissioned by the BBC, with actor-singer-comic Shane Richie as host. In Decimate, a team of three players must answer questions in order to preserve as much cash as possible. Each time a player answers a question incorrectly, the prize money is “decimated.” The cash left in the wall, after all three team members have played, will be what they go on to play for in the final round. “This new modern game show perfectly matches the values conveyed by Shine France, namely a large entertainment innovative, inclusive and family,” CEO Thierry Lachkar said. Also on Wednesday, Shine France optioned the Keshet International format Help! I Can’t Cook! prior to its Mipcom launch. The show sees 10 “kitchenophobe” celebrities, who haven’t the slightest clue about cooking but can have large egos and die-hard competitive streaks, and give them some tasks over three weeks in a closed-door culinary institute. “Help I Can’t Cook! fits into the DNA of our programming perfectly: a great quality entertainment show combined with feel-good TV,” Lachkar said.

Talpa Media is expanding its international production portfolio with today’s launch of Talpa Middle East. Based in Dubai, it will represent Talpa’s catalog across North Africa and the Middle East and produce local versions of the company’s formats. Production veteran Ziad Kebbi, who has worked on Arab versions of such global formats as The Voice, Betty La Fea, Deal Or No Deal, Wheel Of Fortune and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, will lead the new company as CEO. Talpa Middle East’s first production will be the third season of MBC’s pan-regional Arab adaptation The Voice Arabia. “The Arab-speaking region has been evolving rapidly, both on a technological and industrial level,” Talpa Global Managing Director Maarten Meijs said. “With 350 million people spread over such a vast area in so many countries, it is clearly a region with many opportunities.”
