Universal Takes World On ‘Dad’s Army’ With Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine-Zeta-JonesSt Trinian’s and Johnny English Reborn helmer Oliver Parker is set to direct a feature adaptation of classic British sitcom, Dad’s Army. Shooting starts this month in England on the Universal Pictures, Screen Yorkshire and DJ Films comedy. Universal Pictures International, through Universal Pictures International Production, has worldwide rights. Originally created by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, the BBC sitcom ran from 1968-1977. The transfer is penned by Hamish McColl (Johnny English Reborn). Bill Nighy will star with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Toby Jones, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Mark Gatiss, Blake Harrison, Danny Mays, Bill Paterson, Sarah Lancashire, Alison Steadman and Annette Crosbie.

bill_nighyThe story is set in 1944 as the Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea, morale amongst the Home Guard (local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service) is low. Their new mission to patrol the Dover army base is a great chance to revive their spirits and reputation – until glamorous journalist Rose Winters arrives to write about their exploits, setting the pulses racing and putting the local women on red alert. MI5 then discover a radio signal sent direct to Berlin from Walmington-on-Sea: There’s a spy on the loose and the outcome of the war is suddenly at stake.

Damian Jones (The Iron Lady) is producer. The film is a Universal Pictures presentation of a DJ Films production, supported by Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund, in association with British Film Company, Worldwide Theatrix Ltd and Jimmy Perry Productions.
