‘Utopia’ & ‘Last Man Standing’ Return Down, ‘Shark Tank’ & ‘Hawaii Five-O’ Steady – Ratings Rat Race

It was a Friday of drama, comedy and reality and at least right off the bat, comedy and reality tied – at least one unscripted show that is. Back for a fourth season, Last Man Standing (1.2/5) kicked off ABC’s Friday with a time slot dead heat victory.

While down 20% among adults 18-49 from its half-hour Season 3 premiere on September 20 last year, last night’s 1-Last Man Standinghour opener of the Time Allen-led comedy was even with CBS’ The Amazing Race (1.2/5). In fact, Week 2 of Season 25 of TAR saw a slight rise of 9% over its September 26 premiere. LSM was also down 14% from its 8 – 8:30 PM Season 3 finale on April 25 this year. However both left fellow time slot rival Fox’s Utopia (0.6/2) far behind. In fact, overall ABC won the night in the key demo with a 1.4/5 rating while CBS came first in total viewers with 8.85 million watching.

Cut back to only Fridays now, Utopia also saw one of its original pioneers get axed last night. Not that the drama helped  the struggling social experiment series. It fell 14% from the big rise of last Friday’s airing. With a mere 1.75 million tuning in, last night was also one of the lowest viewerships Utopia has ever had – down a massive 62% from the audience of its September 7 debut. Only the 1.52 million who tuned in for the September 19 show was a worse viewership. While last night was not the worst that Utopia has done on a Friday among the demo, on a single night that is full of competitive originals one has to wonder if the cut to a single airing a week is a just temporary solution to a greater problem for Fox to deal with from the much hyped and highly disappointing show.

On The CW, a new Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.4/2) was down a not funny 33% from its last original on August 18. On the other hand, a new America’s Next Top Model surged 25% from its last new show on September 22.

NBC’s only original of the night was a 2-hour Dateline (1.1/4), which was down 21% from last week. Also in that 9 PM slot, ABC’s Shark Tank (1.8/6) dipped 5% from last week’s 2-hour Season 6 opener while Hawaii Five-O saw a 9% rise from its September 26 Season 5 debut. Being that the ABC entrepreneurial reality series usually sees adjustments in the final numbers of around a tenth, as occurred last week, Shark Tank could end up beating its premiere after all.

At 10 PM, Blue Bloods (1.2/4) was even with its Season 5 debut last week and was easily the most watched show of the night with 10.68 million tuning in. Time slot partner 20/20 (1.2/4) was not so fortunate and saw a 25% drop from last week among the 18-49s.
