‘The Slap’ Castings: Thandie Newton & Melissa George Join NBC Miniseries

Thandie Newton and Melissa George are the latest to board NBC’s eight-episode miniseries. Based on the 2011 Australian short-run series, The Slap is described as a complex family drama that explodes from one small incident where a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. This seemingly minor domestic dispute pulls the family apart, begins to expose long-held secrets and ignites a lawsuit that challenges the core American values of all who are pulled into it. Newton stars on DirecTV’s original drama Rogue, and other credits include Beloved, Crash, Mission: Impossible II and The Chronicles Of Reddick

nbc logoNewton will play Aisha, a doctor, wife of Hector and mother of their two children. She readies herself for the onslaught as she makes preparations for her husband’s birthday party, irritated but somewhat amused when her in-laws show up. George reprises her role from the Aussie mini as Rosie, a hippie wife and meddlesome mother of Hugo, the 5-year-old boy who is slapped after waving a bat in another boy’s face. Convinced that Hugo has been unalterably traumatized, she sets in motion a confrontation that embroils and affects everyone who witnessed it. George’s credits include TV’s The Good Wife, Hunted, Lie To Me Grey’s Anatomy and In Treatment.

They join Peter Sarsgaard, Mary-Louise Parker, Zachary Quinto and Brian Coxin the cast. No airdate has been announced for The Slap, which is directed by Lisa Cholodenko, written by Jon Robin Baitz and produced by Universal Television and Australia’s Matchbox Pictures, producer of the original. Baitz and Matchbox’s Tony Ayres executive produce with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald as well as Ted Gold.
