ABC Nabs 1970s Female Cop Drama From Fake Empire & Kapital Entertainment As Put Pilot

In their first collaboration, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire has teamed with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment for Broad Squad, a period female cop procedural, which has received a put pilot commitment from ABC. ABC Studios, where Fake Empire is under a deal, is producing.

Set in 1978, the series is described as a fictionalized account of the graduating class of Boston’s first female patrol officers. Dubbed “The Broad Squad” by the local press, they arrived at a tumultuous time in Boston’s history, marked by corruption within the police force and a heightened organized crime presence in the city. Navigating rival neighborhoods as well as the conflicting attitudes toward them from everyone, they find themselves tested both on and off duty.

besswohlBess Wohl, actress-writer and graduate of Boston-based Harvard University, will write the script and serve as co-executive producer. Kaplan executive produces alongside Fake Empire’s Schwartz, Savage and Len Goldstein. Alexandra Lydon, who brought the idea to Kaplan, will serve as a producer.

This marks the third sale for Fake Empire at ABC, along with Felony Twins, a comedic mystery drama from Dave Hemingson, which has a put pilot commitment, and a drama from Jeff Wadlow. Fake Empire’s first series with ABC Studios, the 10-episode Astronaut Wives Club written by Savage, premieres on ABC this coming midseason. The company also has the CW/WBTV drama Hart Of Dixie returning for its fourth season. Schwartz and Savage are repped by WME and attorney Joel McKuin.

Kapital Entertainment has four series on the air: The Mysteries Of Laura, Instant Mom, Chasing Life and the upcoming Secrets and Lies. Kaplan has sold a slew of projects so far this season, including a Dana Klein comedy at Fox, which has a put pilot commitment.

Wohl, repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment, most recently wrote the play American Hero, which premiered on Broadway in March. She has worked with Fake Empire on the feature side, writing the script The Luxe. Lydon is with Silver Lining Entertainment.
