Helen Mirren’s UK Co-Stars Set For Broadway ‘Audience’

Actors Equity has given its OK for Brit thespians Geoffrey Beevers, Michael Elwyn, Richard McCabe, and Rufus Wright to accompany Olivier Award-winning Mirren’s Queen Elizabeth II to Broadway in the spring. The Stephen Daldry production of  Peter Morgan’s play will run at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre beginning on February 17, 2015, with opening night  on March 8. It runs through June 28. The rest of the 18-member company is TBA.

The Audience is described as: “For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said, not even to their spouses. The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister uses these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. In turn, the Queen can’t help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases. These private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age, from the beginning of Elizabeth II’s reign to today. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.”

Beevers (Clash of the Titans, Dr. Who) will play the Queen’s equerry, the officer in the royal household who attends the family. Elwyn (Foyle’s War, EastEnders) is Anthony Eden, widely regarded as one of the least successful British Prime Ministers of the 20th Century as a result of his disastrous foreign policy during the Suez crisis. McCabe (The Constant Gardener, Notting Hill) plays Harold Wilson, P.M. during the “Swinging Sixties” remembered for the liberalization of laws on censorship, divorce, homosexuality, immigration, abortion and the abolition of capital punishment. Wright (The Quantum of Solace) is cast as David Cameron, the current Prime Minister and the youngest person to hold the office in 200 years. Oscar winner Mirren has been seen previously on Broadway twice, in A Month in the Country (1995) and Dance of Death (2001).

The Audience is designed by multiple Tony winners Bob Crowley (sets and costumes), Rick Fisher (lighting), and Paul Arditti (sound), with music by Paul Englishby. Producers are Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries.
