Jimmy Kimmel To Host Matthew McConaughey’s Cinematheque Tribute As Stars Line Up

Jimmy Kimmel has been named as host and co-stars Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Chastain are among the first wave of stars announced to pay tribute to Matthew pete_hammond_300x100McConaughey as he becomes the 28th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. The organization’s annual benefit gala is October 21 at the Beverly Hilton.

Others announced this morning for the show include Cole Hauser, who co-starred as Benny O’Donnell opposite McConaughey in 1993’s Dazed And Confused, the star’s first film. Lili Fini Zanuck, producer of McConaughey’s 2002 film Reign Of Fire, has also been added to the show, with more co-stars and associates expected to be named in the coming days.

Witherspoon appeared opposite American-Cinematheque-003-copyMcConaughey in 2013’s Mud, while Chastain is in his much-anticipated upcoming November 14 release Interstellar. Garner worked with him on Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past and last year’s Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. He was also nominated for an Emmy for HBO’s True Detective but lost to Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.

McConaughey, in the midst of a career resurgence over the past three years, was an obvious choice by the Cinematheque Board Of Directors which since 1986 has been honoring industry figures in the middle of their careers as opposed to near the end like many other life achievement shows. Their criteria is to name someone “who is fully engaged in his or her work and is committed to making a significant contribution to the art of the motion picture.”

Funds raised benefit the year-round programming of the American Cinematheque which operates the Egyptian and Aero theatres in Los Angeles. Since Eddie Murphy in 1986, past honorees have included Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas, Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Robert Downey Jr. and last year’s Jerry Bruckheimer among others.
