Toronto: Lionsgate In $3 Million Deal For Bill Pohlad-Helmed Beach Boys Pic ‘Love & Mercy’

EXCLUSIVE: In a deal worth $3 million, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have acquired U.S. and Canada rights to Love & Mercy, the Bill Pohlad-directed film that stars Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Giamatti and John Cusack. Written by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner, the film is an unconventional look at the life of musical genius Brian Wilson, the celebrated leader of the Beach Boys, and his legendary battle with mental illness. Several bidders were in the mix.

pohladThere has been a lot of interest in the film as it plays in the Special Presentations section, because Pohlad is such an engaged and tastemaking filmmaker who has made possible such films as the Terrence Malick-directed The Tree Of Life and Into The Wild, and he most recently produced the Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave. Pohlad produced with John Wells, Claire Rudnick Polstein and Wilson, and the deal was handled by CAA.
