Toronto: A24 In $4 Million U.S. Deal For Noah Baumbach’s ‘While We’re Young’

EXCLUSIVE: A24 is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. rights to the Noah Baumbach-directed film While We’re Young for $4 million. A high-end deal for Canadian rights is near, and Glen Basner and his FilmNation is making strong international deals after UTA brokered this domestic pact. It’s a big get for A24, which has been chasing Baumbach since the distrib didn’t get Frances Ha.

Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Driver, Charles Grodin, Maria Dizzia, and Adam Horovitz star in the story of a middle-aged couple whose career and marriage is overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives. The film played through the roof in its Toronto premiere in the Special Presentations section, the same evening as the Chris Rock-directed comedy Top Five premiered. As Deadline reported exclusively, that film is going to Paramount in a $12.5 million deal for world rights. Both pictures are backed by Scott Rudin and Barry Diller through IAC, making the duo responsible for the two big deals here at Toronto so far, with UTA brokering both of them.

Buyers I spoke to responded very favorably to the latest by Baumbach, calling it Frances Ha meets Squid And The Whale, with a New York flavor and a more commercial friendly tone than he has delivered so far.
