Jon Stewart Explains ESPN’s Michael Sam In The Shower Report: Video

On The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Jon Stewart noted Michael Sam is historically one step closer to becoming the only openly gay man to play a regular season NFL game when he advanced to the St. Louis Rams 75-man roster. He cut to ESPN’s shower-by-shower coverage of Sam at Rams camp earlier in the week, in which Josina Anderson, when asked how Sam is “fitting in” reported she’d found one Rams defensive player who told her, ” ‘Sam is respecting our space’ and that, from his perspective, he seems to think that Michael Sam is kind of waiting to take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable,” while noting Sam might possibly have been non-in-the-shower because he was doing extra work on the practice field, extra cardio, etc. Stewart had other theories.

(ESPN has apologized for the report saying it “collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports” — taking a page from the toss-yourself-a-compliment-when-apologizing school of PR.)
