Time Warner Cable Says “Sorry” After Overnight Outage

An issue during “routine network maintenance” overnight caused a nationwide outage of Time Warner Cable’s VOD and Internet services, affecting an estimated 11 million subscribers before being restored around 6 AM Eastern time for most customers (though one complained on Twitter that her service didn’t return for two more hours). The nation’s No. 2 cabler, which is in the middle of a very controversial merger with No. 1 Comcast, tweeted an apology afterward:

The outage lasted an estimated 1.5 hours. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo harrumphed that the outage showed the importance of a reliable Internet backbone for the economy. He said the state would include an investigation of the outage as part its review of the Comcast-TWC merger. At the time the deal was announced, the companies valued the transaction at $45.2 billion. It since has signed a side deal estimated at $20 billion with Charter Communications, contingent on the merger’s regulatory approval, to sell off and swap systems in Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere to reduce the merged companies’ share of national cable households to below 30%.
