RATINGS RAT RACE: ABC, Fox Post Gains Against Football-Boosted NBC & CBS

Football ruled Sunday ratings once again with NBC’s Sunday Night Football and CBS’ football overrun towering over the primetime competition. But there was a good story on the entertainment side for ABC and Fox whose lineups were up across-the-board by double digits. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2.5/6) led the gains with a 39% improvement from its season low last Sunday when ratings were impacted by Halloween celebrations. Desperate Housewives (4.0/9) was up 14%, and Brothers & Sisters (2.6/7) was up 13%. At Fox, which returned to regular programming on the night after 3 weeks of baseball preemptions, the biggest gainer was The Simpsons (3.7/9) at 8 PM, up 23% from its last original on Oct. 10. The Cleveland Show (3.1/7) was up 19% to tie its season high, Family Guy (3.8/9) was up 12% and American Dad (2.9/7) up 16%.

Another ratings swing at CBS whose lineup was impacted by a monster 67-minute NFL overrun. After dropping 53% without a football lead-in last week to a 1.6/5 at 7 PM, 60 Minutes was up by at least that much this week. The 8 PM hour, which featured 7 minutes of football overrun and 53 minutes of 60 Minutes averaged 4.0/10. (60 Minutes was additionally boosted by featuring an interview with President Barack Obama.) The 9 PM hour, which featured mostly The Amazing Race, did a 3.2/7, a 23% rise for the reality competition, while Undercover Boss (2.6/7) appears to be heading to a new series low, down 13% from last week when it aired at 9 PM.

NBC is expected to log a ninth consecutive Sunday victory with Sunday Night Football. The lopsided game between Green Bay  Packers and Dallas Cowboys earned a 12.4 overnight rating/19 share.
