RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Rookie Blue’ Finale & ‘Welcome To Sweden’ Rise, ‘Big Brother’ Steady As CBS Wins Night Of NFL Preemptions

Television is barreling towards the Emmys on Monday, but on primetime last night a few other conclusions were reached as summer winds down. With a two-hour Season 5 finale, ABC’s Rookie Blue (1.1/4) was full of explosions to happen and potential buns in the oven. The anticipation on the Canadian import police drama certainly got traction on a night of not inconsiderable competition. While Thursday’s ABC primetime was preempted in the Philadelphia market for a preseason Eagles-Pittsburgh Steelers NFL game, last night’s Rookie Blue jumped 22% among adults 18-49 over last week’s show for a season high. Thursday’s finale was also up 10% from last season’s ender on September 12, 2013 to hit a finale high for the long-running show.

In terms of viewership, RB had an audience of 5.7 million, up 24% over its August 14 show and 21% from the Season 4 ender to become the show’s most watched finale ever. Adjustments from the football game will inevitably bring in the final numbers in mind, things were even better for RB’s lead-in. Week 4 of freshman The Quest (0.7/3) saw a 40% surge from its August 14 show to hit a high in the demo.

Covering just over 2% of the country, CBS also had NFL preseason preemptions due to the Eagles vs. Steelers game. Still, on an encore heavy night, the 4% bump that Big Brother  (2.3/8) left the vet reality show steady with last week. With an eviction, a return and the end of a show romance last night, the 1-hour Big Brother was the highest rated show of Thursday night. With an audience of 8 million, the 8 PM Big Bang Theory repeat was the most watched show of the night. CBS won the night in the key demo with a 1.5/6 rating and among viewers with an audience of 5.93 million watching. Univision was second in the 18-49 demo with a 1.3/5 rating while ABC was second in viewers with 4.68 million.

NBC also had NFL preseason preemptions last night in Indianapolis and in Jacksonville. While not huge markets, they could see adjustments later in the final ratings. Having said that with the cancellation of Working The Engels on August 20, the network went with a double dose of Welcome to Sweden last night. In its regular 9PM slot, the comedy, which got a second season pickup on August 4, was back with a vengeance. With a 0.7/2 rating among the 18-49s, the show was up 40% from its last original on August 7. In the Engels 9:30 PM slot, the second Sweden got the same result as its 9 PM show. Otherwise NBC aired a Hollywood Game Night (0.9/4) repeat and an America’s Got Talent (0.6/2) encore last night.

Fox and the CW were all repeats on Thursday.
