WGBH Options Bestselling Children’s Series ‘Pinkalicious’

Victoria Kann’s bestselling children’s series Pinkalicious is headed to the small screen. Boston-based WGBH has optioned rights to the title for development as an animated TV series targeting 3- to 8-year-olds, the public broadcaster/producer said today.

Published by HarperCollins, the books follow the life of Pinkalicious, a young girl who loves pink for all the right reasons. It’s what turns her from a ho-hum, everyday child into a creatively alive kid who can correspond with fairies, turn trash into a boat-mobile or ride off on a unicorn during soccer practice. The character was inspired by Kann’s daughters, who love cupcakes, dress-up and all things pink.

WGBH logoDorothea Gillim (Curious George, The Time Warp Trio) will oversee the production. “We are thrilled to bring WGBH’s expertise in developing book-based series to the incredible world Victoria Kann has created,” says Gillim. “Pinkalicious is a character kids really connect with — she’s an everyday girl who’s confident, knows what she likes, and fancies herself special enough to wear any tiara and wand in her very colorful imagination.”

Said author-illustrator Kann: “As both a youngster watching TV and a parent, I have benefited from the wealth of colorful, and engaging children’s programming created by WGBH for kids nationwide. I consider it an honor that Pinkalicious is now joining this remarkable media family committed to producing innovative content that inspires and informs.”

Another HarperCollins-published series aimed at young girls, the fashion-themed Fancy Nancy books by Jane O’Connor, was acquired by Fox in 2012 for feature development with Shawn Levy’s 21 Prods and Tina Fey producing.
