RATINGS RAT RACE: NFL Preseason Wins Night For Fox, ‘Rising Star’ Up, ‘Big Brother’ Steady

Heading toward the start of the NFL regular season with defending Super Bowl champs the Seattle Seahawks taking on the Green Bay Packers on September 4, who wins and who loses on the field in weekend preseason games is more for the new players than the rankings. But on TV a win is a win especially on a competitive Sunday night. Falling to the Carolina Panthers 28-16 in their second preseason game this year, the Kansas City Chiefs helped score for Fox overall as the network won the night with a 1.8/6 rating among adults 18-49.  In metered market results, the 8:11 – 11:25 PM ET game at Charlotte’s Bank Of America Stadium pulled in 4.1/7. That’s a 16% drop from the comparable game on August 18 last year between the Indianapolis Colts against the New York Giants, which had a 4.9 MM result.

In preliminary ratings, which are very tentative at this point, the Panther and Chiefs’ game drew a 2.0/6 rating among adults 18-49 with 5.97 million watching. That’s up 10% from the preliminary 1.9 of the Colts and Giants game of last year, which was also on Fox. Viewershipwise this year’s game was almost exactly even with last year’s. As always with live events like football, expect adjustments in the final numbers later today. Fox topped the night among the key demo while CBS was No. #1 with 6.32 million viewers.

Over on ABC against the lopsided NFL game, it was a mixed bag for the network’s reality tag team. Wipeout (0.8/3) was down 11% from its August 10 show while Rising Star (0.8/2) played strong with a 14% jump over last week. Facing football, CBS also had up and down results on Sunday. Last night’s 8 PM Big Brother (2.1/7) bopped up 5% among adults 18-49 from its 10 PM broadcast last week. That’s a lot better result for CBS than the comparable night last year when BB dropped double digits against the NFL preseason game. As things stand now, the 1-hour vet reality show was the highest rated of the night and the most watched with 7.76 million tuning in. That viewership is the best BB has done this summer season so far on any night. With everyone back in their regular schedule, Unforgettable (0.8/3) was even with its last original on August 3 while Reckless (0.5/2) took a 17% dive to tie a low in the demo in preliminary ratings.

NBC was all repeats last night.
