Intl Box Office Final: ‘Turtles’ Overpower ‘Expendables 3’ In Russia; ‘Dragon 2’ Takes Flight In China With $25.9M

cinemaworld3rd UPDATE, Monday 12:46 PM: Final numbers are now in for The Expendables 3, Let’s Be Cops, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, Into the Storm, Step Up All In, Hercules, Lucy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2, Boyhood, The Fault in Our Stars, and Neighbors. Sex Tape and 22 Jump Street just came in at 12:55 PM and has been added below.

Also just added at 4:50 PM is the China opening of Pompei, the big-budget movie that bombed in the states with only $23.1M all in when it bowed in Feb of  2014. Overseas, it has grossed a total of $85.3M. This, after it opened in China to No. 2 with $6.5M on 3,450 runs way under How to Train Your Dragon‘s $25.9M debut on 3,379 runs. It lost its No. 2 spot when local title Z Storm entered the market.

2ND UPDATE, 5:16 PM PT: Among the new entries in the Rentrak Top 20 this week is The Expendables 3 with an estimated offshore cume of $15M. We know the movie underperformed in Russia with a Thursday-Sunday take that was 53% below the bow of 2012’s Expendables 2. We also know that an illegal download has been circulating in the country for about three weeks. Russia opened to No. 2 behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with $3.8M in 1,025 dates. Spain opened Thursday to capitalize on Friday’s religious holiday in the country and also placed No. 2 with $1.7M on 300 runs. Universal said that piracy did damage the grosses in Russia and in Spain where together the two territories grossed only $5.4M. They said “a good-quality, illegal copy” has been making the round for about a month. It’s been available, actually, in 1080p HD, according to our sources. It opens in Italy on Sept. 4.

What we’re still waiting on are exact figures out of markets like Mexico and Australia. I understand the UK was worth about $2.6M for a roughly 17% drop from Exp2. The group set its international promotional wheels in motion back in Cannes last May. While the spectacle there of Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson palling around and riding tanks down the Croisette was a fantastic photo op, the film hit a road bump with an online leak that had resulted in about 5M downloads before this weekend’s release. Folks are pointing to that as a reason for soft numbers this weekend, as well as franchise fatigue and the downshift to a PG-13 rating when there had already been earlier laments that the first film wasn’t sufficiently action-heavy. The sequel in 2012 had also underperformed in the U.S., the UK and Japan, but overall Exp2 grossed over $220M overseas vs Exp1’s $171M offshore haul. Russia was the No. 2 market for the last outing with about $18M, but its $3.8M opening weekend just gone doesn’t portend too well in such a fast-burn territory.

how to train your dragon 2Overall, the Top 10 studio titles were down 31% compared to last weekend and 9% on last year. In the comparable frame in 2013 were Elysium with $23.4M in its 2nd session, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters with $21.8M in frame 2; and Pacific Rim and The Smurfs 2 coming in with $20M each. The big grosser this weekend was How To Train Your Dragon 2 at $37.6M thanks to a fire-breathing $25.9M kickoff in China. Also in China this week, Hong Kong anti-corruption action pic Z Storm grossed $5M in two days. Elsewhere in Asia, Roaring Currents continued to storm the Korea box office with an additional $20M this weekend. It’s now got a cume of $110M there making it the highest-grossing picture of all time. Also in Korea, The Pirates plundered a further $13.5M for a cume of $32.5M and Sea Fog entered the charts with a $6M weekend and a $7.5M cume. As summer winds down, next week’s major openers include Sin City: A Dame To Kill For in 15 markets including Russia, and China’s The Four III. Exp3 notably expands to Western Europe and Brazil; Into The Storm lands in the UK, Germany, Japan and elsewhere; and Lucy hits the UK and Spain among others.

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtlesPREVIOUS, 11:15 AM PT: Even with all those muscles, The Expendables 3 was no match for Turtle power in Russia this weekend. In its 2nd frame, Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles added $5.1M in 1,800 runs to retain the No. 1 slot, relegating Sly and the gang to No. 2 in their debut there with an estimated $3.8M at 1,025 dates. Turtles took in a strong $26.1M from 4,515 locales for a $68.1M cume to date.

Universal is handling Exp3 there and also opened the film in Spain this weekend. Combined with Russia, the first weekend cume is $5.4M at 1,325 dates in the two markets. As with the soft domestic results, which were 43% below the second film in the franchise, the Exp3 Russia debut is widely off the starts for the first two installments. The previous film bowed to $8M+ in the powerhouse Russian market which was ultimately its 2nd biggest overseas. Franchise fatigue looks to be a factor, but it also appears those illegal downloads really packed a punch. The film opened in over 35 other markets this weekend, including the UK, and we’re still expecting those figures.

While we wait on those and some other numbers, below are results for returning heroes How To Train Your Dragon 2, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lucy, Hercules, and others. In notable holdover happnenings this weekend, Universal release The Purge: Anarchy crossed the $100M mark worldwide with an estimated global cume of $101.4M — off of a $9M budget. Also, 22 Jump Street has passed $300M worldwide; Maleficent has now grossed $507M overseas, making it the 3rd biggest international release of 2014; and Transformers: Age Of Extinction has surpassed Iron Man 3 to become the 6th highest-grossing title of all time internationally.

Overall this weekend, Fox and DreamWorks Animation‘s How To Train Your Dragon 2 was the studio winner thanks to a $25.9M opening in China. At 3,379 locations, the sequel bested the original by a multiple of eight. DreamWorks Animation has a strong record in China with last year’s The Croods becoming the top animated movie of all time as an original. In total, HTTYD2 added $37.7M this frame from 8,424 screens in 28 markets. On Friday, the film passed $500M globally. The international cume is now $366M with the movie set to pass Rio 2 later this week as the biggest animated title at the international box office in 2014. The other major opening this weekend was in Italy where $3M at 676 locations was good for the No. 1 spot and was 105% bigger than Dragon 1.

Guardians Of The Galaxy PosterDisney/Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy added a better than estimated $35.2M across about 65 markets. In its 3rd weekend, it importantly bowed in France which sped off with $7.2M. Also opening this frame was Spain with $3M. Both opening weekends are ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s debut perfs earlier this year. GOTG now brings its total cume to $197.6M overseas to surpass Captain America: The First Avenger‘s $194M. There are still key markets to come including Germany (Aug 28), Japan (Sept 13), Italy (Oct 22) and China which is expected to take an early fall slot. The worldwide cume  is $420.3M. Outside domestic, the biggest markets are the UK ($31.6M), Russia ($30.7M) and Mexico ($16.6M).

The Ninjas on the halfshell served up a total of $25.6M internationally this weekend, including a fantastic $6M No. 1 bow in family-friendly Brazil. The worldwide cume is now $185.1M. Mexico was a big holdover this weekend with $3.2M and a second frame at No. 1 with a cume of $13.3M. There are several key openings to come including Korea (Aug 28), Australia (Sept 11), France (Oct 15), Germany (Oct 16), Spain/UK (Oct 17) and Japan (Jan 9).

lucy-movie-trailerLucy shot to No. 1 openings in Germany, Austria, Cyprus, Lebanon, Poland and German-speaking Switzerland this weekend after opening in 10 new markets. Universal currently has the movie in 24 markets and brought in a little less than expected for a final take of $12.9M at 1,779 dates in those territories for an early total of $31.3M. The international weekend estimate including non-Universal territories (France, Belgium, Netherlands and Hong Kong) is $2o.9M for a total of $59.5M (also a little lower than Sunday’s estimates). Germany embraced Scarlett Johansson’s eponymous badass with a weekend gross of $5.1M at 458 dates. Continuing the trend he’s found elsewhere with the film, that makes it the biggest opening ever for a film directed by Luc Besson in Germany. It is also the 5th best opening of all films in Germany this year. Austria had a No.1 opening with $943K on 73 runs, marking — once again — a best for Besson not only here but he repeated that in Poland. With $885K on 113 runs, it was not only the director’s best opener ever in the country but also the 6th biggest opening of all films in Poland in 2014. Besson also had another No. 1 in German-Switzerland with $1.1M for total to date of $1.6M in that territory. Universal has 36 territories still to open including the UK, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand and Spain next frame.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes earned $16.6M from 6,009 screens in 65 markets for an offshore cume of $337.2M. There were no new openings this frame, but it held its ground in Germany with $3.8M from 782 runs — more than double the 2nd weekend of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes — and a 96% 3D share. The UK has also risen to a cume of $50.5M after five weeks in play, making it the strongest market so far. Other major markets are France ($29.46M), Mexico ($24.18M) and Brazil ($22.7M). Next up is China on Aug 29.

transformers 4Transformers: Age Of Extinction morphed up another $8M in 52 territories this weekend at 3,551 locations. With a new cume of $810.8M, the movie has surpassed Iron Man 3 to become the 6th highest-grossing title of all time internationally. Particularly, TAOE was able to capitalize on the Obon holidays in Japan to scoop up a $3.4M second weekend at 335 locations, only a 28% decline from its opening weekend. The local cume is $17.9M. Also notable is the German holdover where it added $1.3M from 426 sites, lifting the local cume to $36.6M. However, in Spain, it dropped 73% from its opening weekend to take in $718K from 354 locales; its total cume to date in Spain is $5.1M.

After debuting last weekend to $8.3M, Warner BrosInto The Storm added an estimated $6.7M with 1.1M admissions from 2,744 screens this frame. The international cume is now $18.6M in 29 markets. It was anything but stormy in France this weekend where the movie bowed to $1.3M on 308 screens (including sneaks). This was a long sunny weekend in France with Friday the 15th a day off. In Hong Kong, Into The Storm whipped up $1M from 57 screens, ranking a strong No. 1 and over 70% ahead of No. 2 film Lucy in its 2nd frame. In holdovers, Russia added an estimated $1.4M on 1,033 screens. The cume to date there is now $5.3M, surpassing the lifetime of comp title The Impossible by 257%. It’s also bested that film’s performance in Thailand by 70% with a $1.4M cume. Upcoming releases include Germany (Aug 21), the UK and Japan (Aug 22), Korea and Brazil (Aug 28), Spain (Aug 29), Mexico and Australia (Sept 4) and China (Sept 12).

Hercules lifted its overseas total to $80M, plundering a further $4.5M from 3,680 sites in 43 markets. The major opener was Italy with a $1.9M No. 2 slot at 304 locations. It opens in Mexico this weekend.

Sony’s Sex Tape keeps unspooling overseas with $4M more to stuff under the mattress this weekend for a total cume to date of $3.3M. Now playing in 37 markets on 1,947 runs, the movie notably opened in the Philippines with $264K on 83 screens, 76% above the opening of Bad Teacher and on par with The Other Woman. Mexico fell 44% from its great opening session, with $940K for a market cume of $3.8M. Other strong cumes include Australia ($6.7M), Russia ($6.2M) and Spain ($3.8M). Brazil bows next week followed by the UK on Sept 3, France on Sept 10 and Germany and Italy on Sept 11.

fault-our-stars-movie-posterThe Fault In Our Stars is still shining with a better than estimated $4M from 1,139 screens in 37 markets. Again working the counterprogramming angle, the romancer opened in Korea to $1.78M from 317 screens amid a bevy of epic local pics that are dominating male audience attention. TFIOS also took $1.38M from 68 runs in its Venezuela bow. The international cume is now $148.6M and the next stop is France on Aug 20.

WB Japan’s Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno dropped 19% in its 3rd frame with an estimated gross of $3.5M on 438 screens. The cume to date is now $31.1M, bigger than the entire run of the first Rurouni Kenshin by 6%.

Hot summer comedy 22 Jump Street broke the $300M worldwide cume this weekend with an additional estimated $3.1M 1,302 runs from 34 territories. That brings the overseas cume to $114M. Thailand opened last Tuesday, earning $190K. In holdovers, Germany fell just 26% in its 3rd frame (cume $11.7M), and Austria fell 10% (cume $1.9M). The top markets remain the UK ($31.5M), Australia ($21.3M) and Russia ($9.6M). Spain, France and Mexico bow later this month and Brazil opens in September.

Universal’s The Purge: Anarchy continues to scare up overseas business with an estimated $2.1M from 2,241 dates in 32 territories this frame. The international total is now $30.8M which pushes the James DeMonaco-helmed sequel past the $100M worldwide mark. In another milestone, the Blumhouse picture has passed the lifetime international gross for The Purge ($26.6M). There are 16 territories to open over the next two months including Egypt and South Africa next weekend.

Universal comedy Neighbors grossed an estimated $1.7M at 582 dates in 21 territories. The international total is now $114.4M and the worldwide total is $264.6M. There were no new openings this weekend but France held well in its 2nd frame with $1.2M at 313 dates for a 12-day total of $3.8M.

In the four territories handled by Universal, the dance fivequel added $835K at 489 dates this frame. The film actually ended the weekend with a total gross of $4.2M from 38 markets on 1,600 runs. The studio total is $10.5M of $46.3M to date internationally. Adding in the domestic total of $11.8M, the worldwide cume for this pic is $15.1M. Panama opens next on the 21st, followed by Australia on Sept. 11.

Let’s Be Cops masqueraded around Holland in its overseas bow with $536K from 53 screens. Fox says that’s bigger than 21 Jump Street‘s opening in 2012. The total take in its first\ offshore weekend was a better than expected $728K in four markets. Seven smaller markets get the film next weekend, followed by another 12 markets the week after, including the UK and Russia.

BoyhoodBoyhood has now grossed $8M for Universal in its overseas markets. The weekend was worth an extra $342K for the Richard Linklater pic that still has 30 territories to go throughout awards season.

Key market round-ups

Expendables 3 opened on Thursday on 464 screens to finish the weekend in what I understand was 3rd place with $2.6M. Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Inbetweeners 2 are still playing well in the market. The latter now has an estimated cume of $42.5M across the UK, Ireland and Australia after adding $7M this frame. Also opening locally was Simon Pegg-starrer Hector And The Search For Happiness; well-reviewed Indian pic Singham Returns; and animated football film The Unbeatables. The Juan José Campanella-directed family film has had great success in Latin America and the local version was dubbed by a voice cast that includes Harry Potter’s Rupert Grint.

After opening on Thursday to $5.6M, How To Train Your Dragon 2 fired up a weekend cume of $25.9M on 3,379 screens. It far outperformed the opening of the original whose first weekend was worth $2.9M. It’s worth noting, though, that the market had thousands fewer screens back then. Nevertheless, DreamWorks Animation has a good record in China. Last year’s The Croods amassed over $63M there to make it the top animated movie of all time as an original. And, DWA is well ensconced with Oriental DreamWorks which is making Kung Fu Panda 3 locally. David Lam’s Z Storm also opened in the Middle Kingdom this weekend. The cop action thriller revolves around Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption and its investigation of a charity fund that’s involved in a ponzi scheme. Louis Koo and Gordon Lam star. That pic ended up taking in $5M in two days of release. Pompei took the No. 2 spot with $6.5M.

Roaring Currents, which was just released in the U.S. under the title The Admiral: Roaring Currents, continues its domination of the Korean box office. At $110M it is now the biggest earner of all time there. Directed by Han-min Kim, it portrays the historic Battle of Myeongnyang on the southwestern coast of the Korean peninsula. Bowing this week, a more contemporary ocean-set drama, Sea Fog, has cumed $7.5M since its release on Aug 13. Also known as Haemoo, it’s directed by Sim Seong-bo, who co-wrote the script with Bong Joon-ho based on the 2007 stage play which itself is based on the true story of an October 7, 2001 incident in which 25 Korean-Chinese stowaways on the Korean fishing vessel Taechangho suffocated to death and were then dumped into the sea. Bong is also producer. Entering the market as counterprogramming, The Fault In Our Stars had a stellar start with $1.78M on 317 screens; it was the top import this week landing at No. 4 behind the above two films and another local pic, The Pirates.

movies-into-the-storm-posterElsewhere in Asia, Warner Bros’ Into The Storm has taken $1.9M in Malaysia; $1.7M in Taiwan; $1.4M in Thailand, up 70% on comparable disaster drama The Impossible; and $1M in the Philippines.

Germany was gaga for Lucy this weekend giving it the biggest opening ever for a film directed by Luc Besson at $5.1M across 458 dates. That put Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes at No. 2 in its 2nd frame with $3.8M from 782 screens. Apes‘ cume is now $12.3M France’s Qu’Est-ce Qu’On A Fait Au Bon Dieu?! is continuing its strong run in Germany proving again that comedy travels across those borders. And, Germany was also the top holdover market for HTTYD2 with $2.2M from 1,082 for a drop of only 9% from last weekend. Nearby, Austria was also a No. 1 bow for Lucy with $943K at 73 dates. It’s also No. 1 in German-speaking Switzerland with $1.1M for a total of $1.6M in German and French-speaking Switzerland. And, in Poland, it debuted to $885K at 113 dates, again Besson’s best-ever in the market.

Brazil made good on its reputation as a family-friendly market with a big $6M bow for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At 456 locations, it opened 10% bigger than Guardians Of The Galaxy, Paramount says. It also scored a No. 1 debut in Argentina with $1.1M in 135 runs — it’s a 68% increase G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s opening weekend in the country. The reboot (reshell?) also held well in Mexico with $3.1M in its 2nd frame (down only 47%) in 652 locations and another No. 1, meaning it will have bested Exp3’s debut there. Turtles cume now in Mexico is $13.2M.

Director Rohit Shetty’s Singham Returns opened to the year’s best first day with 32.09 crore or $5.25M last week. For the weekend, it took about $8.7M. The police action/drama stars Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor. Salman Khan’s Kick previously held the best first-day bow of 2014, but that film is still punching above its weight with a total take that has now bested rival Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express. It’s earned about $37.5M after three weeks (and is still running) versus Chennai’s $37.1M lifetime last year.
