RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Gang Related’ Rises In Finale, ‘Big Brother’ Steady As CBS Ties Univision In Demo Win

Get in those last few days of kickin’ back if you can because summer is coming to a close. It’s not just the calendar slothing toward Labor Day but the fact that finales are popping up all over the place on primetime. In fact, last night saw three summer shows wrap up their runs.

On Fox, freshman Gang Related (0.7/2) took its bow without any news yet if the LA-based crime drama will be coming back for a Season 2. Still, like any good finale, last night’s show had loss, vengeance, betrayal, a wedding, a trip to Mexico, intrigue, a Godfather homage and one Hell of a convoy ambush. Coming off a soft debut back on May 22, GR has had an up and down run, but last night’s finale certainly saw the show on an upward movement. Not only did Gang Related have a 17% rise among Adults 18-49 over its August 7 show but it also saw a 20% jump in viewership to 2.4 million.

An encore heavy CBS had the top-rated show of the night in an original Big Brother  (2.2/7) and the most watched show in its 8 PM Big Bang Theory repeat with had 7.67 million viewers. There was an elimination on the vet reality show and slight drop of 4% from last week’s show. Still, CBS tied with Univision for the top-rated network of Thursday’s primetime with a 1.4/5 and topped the night among viewers with 5.48 million watching.

On ABC, it was NY Med (0.9/3) which had its finale. The last show of the second season of the docu series dipped 9% from the 1.0/3 that its Season 1 ender got on August 22, 2012 on a night of about equal competition. The show was also even among the key demo from last week. The only one of the Big 4 with a full original slate, ABC had week 3 of The Quest (0.6/3) and Rookie Blue (1.03) on before NY Med. The former was steady with last week while the latter was up 25% from last week. Of course, ABC saw a NFL pre-season pre-emption in Chicago last night, so expect adjustments later in the day. Then there’s the fact that August 7 was a night of skewed ratings because of NFL pre-season pre-emptions of its own and President Obama‘s speech from the White House that cut into primetime on the East Coast.

Renewed on July 13, Last Comic Standing (1.4/5) ended its first reboot season with a 2-hour finale of fun. That meant that a comic champ was crowned from the trio of finalists. However, beyond that LCS is in a bit of grey zone. Yes, the Roseanne Barr, Russell Peters and Keenen Ivory Wayans judged LCS had its best result among the 18-49s in 9 weeks. Yes, last night’s LSC was up a sturdy 40% from last week and steady with the August 9, 2010 finale of that version of the show that has to be taken as a bit of preliminary numbers punch line. Like ABC, NBC had NFL pre-emptions last night with Jacksonville being the major market in question. Which means, there will be adjustments in the final numbers.

The CW was all repeats last night.
