Relativity Taps ‘Ride Along’ Producer To Head New Multicultural Division

The producer of hits such as Ride Along, the Barbershop franchise and the upcoming NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton has been tapped as EVP Production and President of Relativity Media‘s newly formed multicultural division. Matt Alvarez will be tasked with building out Relativity’s slate with an emphasis on projects driven by diverse filmmakers, beginning this month. The first film to fall under the new division is Relativity’s upcoming Beyond the Lights from writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as a hot new recording artist primed for superstardom in the November 14 release, also starring Nate Parker, Minnie Driver, Colson “Machine Gun Kelly” Baker and Danny Glover and produced by Stephanie Allain, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Ryan Kavanaugh and Amar’e Stoudemire. Relativity President Tucker Tooley and Alvarez are exec producers.

Matt Alvarez is one of the most creative and successful executives in our industry and is the perfect person to build out our new multicultural division,” said Tooley. “He has a keen eye, remarkable relationships and an incredible track-record. We have had a great experience working with him on Beyond the Lights and look forward to building off that success.”

Alvarez started out in acquisitions at New Line before launching Cube Vision in 1999 with rapper Ice Cube. There he produced Cube’s Next Friday, the Barbershop franchise, the Are We There Yet? franchise, and All About the Benjamins. He’s currently producing sequel Ride Along 2 and Straight Outta Compton.
