Kevin Smith’s Horror-Comedy ‘Tusk’ To Open Fantastic Fest 2014

Kevin Smith and his horror-comedy Tusk will open the 10th edition of genre-centric Fantastic Fest in Austin, the festival announced today. The tale of a podcaster (Justin Long) who goes missing while interviewing a mysterious seafarer in Manitoba will be released by A24 on September 19 after making its debut in Toronto. Tusk leads a lineup of genre films by filmmakers from LA to Latvia this year, including the world premiere of horror anthology sequels ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral and new films from the makers of Fantastic Fest faves Dogtooth and New Kids Nitro. Special events include a Leonard Maltin-themed trivia tournament and a live version of comedy show The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail featuring comedians Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani. This is the annual confab for hardcore genre cinephiles where fest founder Tim League regularly boxes celeb guests in the ring, so expect more out-there events and programming announcements to come. This year also marks the reopening of League’s Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar theater and entertainment hub The Highball, where the fest is centered. Fantastic Fest will be held September 18-25.
