Ratings Rat Race: First ‘Big Brother’ Elimination Of Season Tops Holiday-Eve TV

Fireworks in Boston, and a hurricane in the Carolinas, created challenges for stat spinners this morning.

Big Brother‘s first elimination of its 16th season finished first in overall audience (5.12 million viewers) and, if ratings hold, in the demo (1.6).  (Two nights earlier, the fourth episode of the 16th season of Big Brother clocked a 1.8 demo rating, and 5.61 million viewers — the demo performance being a 22% drop from previous week, maybe because the episode featured a spelling bee, as well as the usual internecine shenanigans.) Last night’s 9 PM episode — in which SPOILER ALERT! Joey Van Pelt became the first BB householder to bite the dust, by unanimous vote — was pre-empted in Boston for that city’s annual July 4th Boston Pops concert (12.6) followed by traditional Boston Post-Pops July 4 Fireworks (15.2), CBS noted, adding that there also may have been pre-emptions in some markets for Hurricane Arthur coverage, which may also have affected other broadcasters.
